I highly recommend three books about the war in Vietnam: Rumor of War, The Things They Carried and this book, Fields of Fire. Fields of Fire is a realistic novel about a platoon of grunts (infantry) and their experiences in the bush. Set in the fields of Vietnam (outside Da Nang), you will meet some interesting characters (US marines)/5.

Fields of Fire is James Webb’s classic novel of the Vietnam War, a novel of poetic power, razor-sharp observation, and agonizing human truths seen through the prism of nonstop combat. Weaving together a cast of vivid characters, Fields of Fire captures the journey of unformed men through a man-made hell—until each man finds his fate/5().

Fields of Fire is a novel by U.S. Senator Jim Webb, first published in It follows the lives of several Marines serving in the Vietnam War.

It is told mainly from the viewpoints of three Marines: 2nd Lt Robert E. Lee Hodges, who comes from a long line of soldiers; "Snake" (no full name given), a squad leader in Hodges' platoon, a tough kid Cited by:   Fields of Fire is an antiwar book, yes, but not naively, dumbly anti-soldier or anti-American Webb pulls off the scabs and looks directly, unflinchingly on the open wounds of the Sixties.” — Philadelphia InquirerCited by: Fields of Fire, has lived up to the pace and style of the first 4 books wonderfully.

I really loved all the large scale maneuvers in this book, and it had a strong finish. Marines in camo space armor, and kinetic harpoons sent from orbit as support versus hundred ton aliens/5.

Fields of Fire is one of the most powerful pieces of fiction to be written about the Vietnam War. Its author, James Webb, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, is without a doubt qualified to write this book. Overview Fields of Fire is a historical novel by former Virginia Senator James Webb, who ran for president in the Fields of Fire book election.

Released inthe book is loosely based on Webb’s experiences as a Marine during the Vietnam War. The book is widely regarded as one of the best fictional accounts of the war, The Washington Post calling it one of the “great American war novels.”. ― James Webb, quote from Fields of Fire “I just look at you and say, ‘that used to be me. But it isn't anymore.” Books are seen by some as a throwback to a previous world; conversely, gleaning the main ideas of a book via a quote or a quick summary is typical of the Information Age but is a habit disdained by some diehard readers.

Fields of Fire offers a stunning reversal of accepted military history. Terry Copp challenges and refutes the conventional view that the Canadian contribution to the Battle of Normandy was a 'failure': that the allies won only through the use of 'brute force,' and that the Canadian soldiers and commanding officers were essentially incompetent.

Fields of Fire. This book was recommended to me and it was compared to Band of Brothers. Although the book was good and was probably a very definitive book about the Viet Nam war, it does not compare in anyway to Band of Brothers.

On a scale of 1 - 10, I would give it a six/5(3). Fields of Fire fully described the green hell that was Vietnam for every Marine infantryman who served there. If you want to get a feel for what that war was like, read this book.

If you think you might want to go fight in a war, read this by: I've expected this out of every book, and yet each time Marko weaves a tale that while touching on the war with the aliens also centers on much more broader issues, human interactions, human foes, where yes the aliens are a danger, but so much more is going on.

In Fields of Fire we have a pretty much straight up action/war book. Fields of Fire | The time has come to take the fight to the has been under Lanky control for more than a year. Tweet. KIRKUS REVIEW. Lumpy, often sentimental, and cast like a Hollywood movie--the ghetto black, the Harvard dropout, the Southern white lieutenant--Webb's first novel lacks the shapely sophistication of more literary Vietnam.
